Announcing a djembe/dunun drum class with Noah Mosgofian!

When: Thursday nights from 6:15-8:00, starting April 2nd. Class dates and
times are subject to change, so please e-mail Noah to confirm in advance.
Where: Noah's house, 3016 E 13th St Austin TX 78702
Cost: $15, with a sliding scale for the amazingly fortunate and the broke
folks.

Class will focus on three areas:
1. Djembe and Dunun technique (how to efficiently get the right sounds from the drum)
2. Traditional rhythms and arrangements. (Kassa, Mandiani, Soli, Dununba,
Sunu, Konkoba, Kaki Lambe, Soko, etc.)
3. Understanding and applying African polyrhythms without having grown up
around them. You will learn to hear complex parts to new rhythms and grasp
them right away (that's the goal anyway).

The level of difficulty will change depending on the participants, but the
class will always be geared towards challenging every student at every
level. Advanced students may learn solo techniques while beginners will
learn basic accompaniment.
The first 20 minutes of each class will be devoted to fundamentals.

Bring a djembe and/or dunun drum. Audio recording is encouraged.

Noah Mosgofian's teaching credits include a 6-week residency in the 1999 Edinburgh
Festival of Arts' World Music and Dance program, San Francisco Ballet's
Dance/Music outreach program, Marin Ballet, and residencies in over 30 schools in
California.
Noah's performance credits include 6 years of international touring with STOMP,
and directing and playing in dozens of dance ensembles and bands playing
traditional West African, Brazilian, Afro-Cuban, Trinidadian, Congolese, and
Ghanaian styles as well as salsa, funk, electronica, hip-hop, jazz, and rock.

Noah's teachers include Mamady Keita, Mabiba Baegne, Fara Tolno, "Changuito"
Quintana, Los Muñequitos de Matanzas, Regino Jimemez, and members of
Irakere, Los Van Van, Timbalada, and Olodum.
