new050.gif (1016 bytes) African Rhythm and Sensibility by John Miller Chernoff.

A masterpiece in analytical cultural exploration
What begins as a primer in African polyrhythm becomes a spiritual quest to understand culture and humanity. Don't skip the endnotes in this impassioned examination of musical tonality and rhythm. Forging a tentative balance between scholarship and interpretation, Chernoff's book addresses the subconscious dynamics of culture, and unwittingly explains "race" more convincingly than the agitprop self-promoters whose explicit goal is to deconstruct the historical consciences of Africans and Europeans.

Games, Exercises & Facilitation  (Book & CD)

by Arthur Hull

A reader from New York , November 27, 1998
unique! wise! not just about drumming!
In an engaging and readable style, Arthur Hull shares his practical wisdom for conducting groups of improvising musicians in a variety of settings, from thousands in the park festivals to dozens in the classroom or boardroom. This is a great and singular resource for music teachers of any instrumental background, music therapists, and workshop facilitators in personal growth or management training. He has succeeded in making the intuitive choices of a master facilitator transparently available by telling humorous and humble stories about his own life path conducting "Village Music Circles" around the world. Foreword by Babtunde Olatunji. GET THIS BOOK!!!

new050.gif (1016 bytes) Drum Gahu! : A Systematic Method for an African Percussion Piece
by David. Locke.      For both the player and the scholar
Drum Gahu is another marvel produced by the leader of Ewe drumming in this country, David Locke. Locke systematicly takes the reader through the patterns, playing techniques, and  descriptions of each instrument; the bell, the rattle, kagan, kidi, sogo, and the master drum. In addition, he provides the reader with execises for the playing of these instruments. The text is easy to read, but the musical notation is a bit small. I highly recommend buying the Drum Gahu tapes that are available. The tapes are of Locke performing most of the musical examples in the book. It also has an excerpt of Gahu being performed in Africa; the real thing! I highly recommend this book to anyone interested in learning about Ewe drumming, and to anyone interested in learning to play Gahu.

Reviews

Jerry Garcia
"Come walk with Mickey in Bakundan's garden. Learn the difference between noise and music, and between music and magic."

Book Description
Thirty years ago Mickey Hart started researching and gathering information on music. His studio walls eventually became covered by these powerful insights about music, resembling a glowing anaconda that had coiled itself along the walls.

Mickey Hart, along with Fred Lieberman, shares these gems from the musical treasure chest the anaconda has guarded all these years. Hart also offers his own insights about the origin and power of music and the sacred ability of music to transform the human spirit.

"Music becomes the language of God in the Ears of the believer, a new language, a secret call." - Mickey Hart

by Layne Redmond

More information about Layne's writings, recordings, and videos is available at her own web site.

Review by Rick Mattingly, Editor, Percussive Notes magazine: "By searching out the lost, early history of the frame drum, Layne Redmond has uncovered an important missing chapter in the history of humanity -- a chapter in which goddessses ruled beside gods and in which women's spirituality, wisdom and sexuality were affirmed through rituals involving drumming. In an age where people are rediscovering the communal and healing powers of rhythm, When The Drummers Were Women establishes the link between ancient knowledge and the contemporary emphasis on the importance of passion and soulfulness to life." .

Bascom is truly one of the all time best authors and anthropologists of the Yoruba religion and culture. He has brought out many kept secrets, legends and patakis of this religion out to the new world so as to not loose this wonderful knowledge with watered down versions of same. This book is a wonderful insight to the Yoruba religion and culture for students and practitioners alike. IFA Divination is a must have to any avid collector, practitioner, or student of African Religion, Yoruba culture or Ifa practice in the Western world.

Bascom's knowledge is inmense !!!
This is an absolutely must have for any students or followers of the Yoruba religion and culture. William Bascom has done an excellent job of bringing out Ifa verses and patakis in this book.

The information he has learned from so many years of his Anthropological studies in Nigeria have proven to be an inmense source of knowledge and wisdom on the subject. Comparing this book to others written on the subject matter, there is no comparision !

All of Bascom's work is phenominal . --This text refers to the paperback edition of this title

by Philip John Neimark

A GREAT Intro to IFA
Mr. Neimark has provided student's of IFA a great place to start. His book is both lucid & inviting. It opens the doorway to the mysteries of the Orisa & the beauty of the religion of IFA. It is a brilliant work that is perfect for someone that knows little about the religion. After being unable to find any material on anything other than Santeria, Mr. Neimark's book is refreshing & more than welcome. I think his writing style is excellent - clear & to the point. His book provides solid information from someone who has been there. Anyone that has ever wanted to explore IFA, look no further. This book is an open door in a religion where so many people pride themselves on withholding information. My thanks for Mr. Neimark for his wonderful & presentation. IFA is a truly beautiful religion & this is a truly wonderful book!!!

A reader from New Jersey, USA , July 18, 1998 5 out of 5 stars
Excellent book for those unfamiliar with the Ifa Religion
I enjoyed reading this book, it gave me a good introduction to the Ifa Religion. Many people shy away from African based religions because of either fear or because of all the secrecy surrounding it. This book helps to dispell all that as it brings out the beauty of this wonderful philosophy and way of life. It's a wonderful book intended for a general audience. Ase!
